LNG Hazards Safety Studies

Gexcon has extensive experience performing hazard analyses for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities worldwide.

Our expertise includes consequence modelling for vapour cloud dispersion, thermal radiation, and vapour cloud explosion scenarios

With our company-developed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package, FLACS-CFD, we can simulate LNG spills on water or land, into sumps and trenches, as well as pressurised, flashing jet releases. FLACS-CFD provides
a computational environment where the software can track the evolution of the LNG source term (LNG pool or flashing jet) and the resulting vapour cloud simultaneously.

The effect of terrain and obstructions are also incorporated for a realistic simulation of the entire unintended release scenario.

Key Services in LNG Safety

LNG pool source term
  • 2D-shallow water model accounts for sump and trough geometry
  • Source term coupled directly with vapour dispersion model

LNG vapour cloud dispersion
  • Efficient simulation of complex geometries (terrain, tanks, barriers)
  • The only CFD model validated against the entire PHMSA MEP database

High-pressure LNG releases
  • Vapour cloud dispersion from flashing jets in complex geometry
  • Realistic simulation of multidirectional sources

Vapour Cloud Explosions (VCE)
  • VCE analysis for hydrocarbon mixtures (E/P mix, other LNG mixtures)
  • Overpressure analysis for LNG clouds in a highly congested area

Environmental impact studies
  • Ambient Air Vaporiser-induced fog dispersion modelling
  • Pollutant dispersion modelling

LNG pool fires
  • Solid flame-based thermal radiation calculation
