HAZID (Hazard Identification)

What is HAZID?

HAZID, which stands for Hazard Identification, is a structured process used to identify potential hazards, risks, and undesirable events within a system, process, project, or facility. HAZID studies are a fundamental part of risk management in various industries, including oil and gas, chemical, manufacturing, construction, and more.

The primary goal of a HAZID study is to recognise and understand potential risks and hazards that could lead to accidents, incidents, or adverse consequences, by helping organisations make informed decisions on how to design, operate, and manage their systems or projects in a way that will minimise risks and enhance safety. 

How is a HAZID conducted?

A HAZID is usually performed by a team that possess relevant skills, knowledge and experience relating to the processes and facility to which the HAZID will be conducted such as process design engineers, operations, maintenance and safety professionals.

Working together, the team will identify various scenarios that could result in a hazard or accident arising from factors such as equipment malfunctions, process deviations, and human errors. Each hazard would be assessed for potential severity or consequence and the likelihood of each identified hazard scenario occurring would be evaluated.

By combining the results of the severity and likelihood of each identified hazard the team will assign a risk level to prioritise which hazards require immediate attention and mitigation and make recommendations on risk reduction and control strategies.
