What is CHAZOP?
CHAZOP, short for "Control Hazard and Operability Study," is a variant of the traditional HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) study. While the core principles of CHAZOP are similar to those of HAZOP, CHAZOP places a specific emphasis on evaluating the control systems and their potential impact on the safety and operability of a process or facility.
CHAZOP studies are especially relevant in industries where process control plays a critical role, such as the chemical, petrochemical, and manufacturing sectors. By focusing on the integration of process operations and control systems, CHAZOP aims to enhance both the safety and effectiveness of industrial processes.
How is CHAZOP conducted?
A CHAZOP study will focus on examining not only the process deviations and their potential consequences, as done in a standard HAZOP, but also the effects of control system failures, malfunctions, and errors. This type of study looks into the interactions between the process itself and the control systems that manage and regulate it.
The consequences of control systems failures and their overall impact on process safety are evaluated and recommendations are made to improve the reliability and overall process safety goals.
