SWPU, the second petroleum university in the People’s Republic of China, was founded in 1958. It is now administered and supported by the Chinese Central Government and the Sichuan Province Local Government, with the latter playing a bigger role.
In 2013, SWPU was selected for the “National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China” and became one of 100 universities selected for the project. In September 2017, it was selected as one of the first “Double First-Class” world-class discipline construction universities in China.
