The latest version of FLACS

Detonation modelling in FLACS consequence modelling software
Now live

FLACS 22.2

FLACS 22.2 is now live with a series of exciting new features and improvements to deliver greater performance and efficiency for in-depth risk and safety studies.

FLACS now features detonation modelling which can be used to simulate the behaviour of substances with higher-speed flames such as hydrogen. There have also been improvements to geometry handling and data output as well as the introduction of a new rewind functionality.

Detonation modelling

FLACS now offers detonation modelling – essential for engineers designing, planning and maintaining facilities with high reactivity, such as hydrogen. By detecting and simulating detonation, users can avoid underestimating the consequence of an explosion. The introduction of detonation modelling reflects Gexcon’s commitment to supporting a safe energy transition for businesses, organisations and communities.

Improved geometry handling

FLACS can now model complex geometries where equipment and facility layouts vary significantly in size and shape. Geometries will no longer need to be converted to ‘boxes and cylinders’, making the software more applicable to users across a range of industries beyond the oil and gas sector. The new capability will enable users to work more efficiently.

Improved data output

The risk of data corruption or loss due to unexpected network or power failure has been significantly reduced thanks to new processes. Output from complex simulations is now stored in multiple files so if data writing is interrupted, some files will be recoverable. The new feature is also useful for archiving, enabling users to select which files they wish to keep and optimise server space.

Rewind functionality

Users will no longer have to restart a simulation and manually adjust the settings after a mass residual error. The restart process is now handled through a ‘rewind’ functionality which will rewind the simulation and choose the time-stepping settings automatically. This new feature will be welcomed by users handling a large number of simulations.
