Role Purpose

Gexcon Netherlands is looking to recruit an experienced, customer focussed Research Scientist, who is passionate about simulation and modelling of software products.

Gexcon Netherlands is Gexcon’s business unit, fully responsible for the development, support, and research of EFFECTS and RISKCURVES, which originated at TNO; the Dutch research institute for applied scientific research.

In this role, you will be involved in developing new physical and thermodynamical models to simulate the accidental release of hazardous chemical substances and implementing such models in Gexcon’s consequence and risk modelling software EFFECTS & RISKCURVES.

You

To be successful in the role, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical or process engineering, with a deep understanding of physics.
  • Robust understanding of chemical safety
  • Experience with simulation/modelling of physical & thermodynamic processes.
  • Good understanding of potential phenomena involved in the release of hazardous chemicals in various storage conditions.
  • Understanding of the methods behind Quantitative Risk Assessment
  • Eagerness to understand the safety implications of the ongoing energy transition
  • Excellent communication (verbal & writing) skills in English.
  • Ability to work in a worldwide international and diverse environment, with its different cultures and time zones.
  • Energetic and self-motivated to produce results
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

The role

Your main focus and responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Research and development of new fire, explosion and/or dispersion models as well as improvement of existing fire, explosion and/or dispersion models
  • Investigate the state of the art of certain modelling methods.
  • Validation of models against experimental data
  • Writing scientific papers and validation reports
  • Getting involved with international research projects
  • Presenting research at international conferences and symposiums
  • Providing 2nd or 3rd line of support for EFFECTS and RISKCURVES customers, based on your expert knowledge of the algorithms of the models.
  • Developing and understanding risk-calculation methodologies
  • Continuously learning about international regulations and requirements
  • Keep up to date on international new developments, both physical and risk-calculation related.
  • Be involved in providing advanced EFFECTS & RISKCURVES training to our customers.
