Introduction
This course is an introduction to the theory and applications of Shell FRED 2022. It will cover all the existing consequence modelling scenarios within the software, including source term modelling, pool formation, gas dispersion, jet and pool fires, impinging fires, vessel burst smoke ingress in buildings/temporary refuges and explosion scenarios in congested and/or confined areas. This course combines both theory and practical exercises, therefore students will be required to practice and apply their new knowledge of the software through hands-on exercises.
The online course time will be instructional presentations on the use of the tool and the accompanying exercises should be completed outside of the scheduled course time. Time will be allowed during and after the presentations for Q&A on the exercises and the instructor will be available during the software evaluation period to answer questions related to the training material.
Who should attend
People who intend to carry out consequence modelling with Shell FRED or work closely together with people performing Shell FRED simulations. These include safety engineers and consultants in risk consultancy companies, oil & gas and process industries, regulatory bodies and engineering companies.
Prerequisites
This course is suitable for completely new users of Shell FRED as well as existing users who would like to refresh their knowledge. In general, no special prerequisites are needed, but any prior knowledge in safety consequence modelling, process engineering and 2D modelling will be helpful.
Benefits for course participants
Attendees will be able to use FRED for process safety-related projects, which also means:
- Development of new skill and knowledge
- Appreciation of hazard distances associated with a range of ignited events
- Development of competency to carry out various process safety-related studies
- Able to develop recommendations on safety-related studies
- Supports attendee’s input to risk planning and mitigation
Attendees will receive a competence certificate from Gexcon at the end of the course.
Benefits for organisations
In addition to the professional skill development of staff, the organization will have the capability to utilise an industry-recognised consequence modelling tool that will assist in carrying out safety-related studies effectively and accurately, including:
- Consequence / Severity studies (hazard distances for explosions, jet and pool fires, flammable cloud extents)
- Mitigative measures (assess the impact of mitigation on ignited event consequences)
- Risk management (input to Quantitative Risk Assessment)
- Regulatory compliance (COMAH / Seveso, ALARP demonstration, ATEX/ DSEAR, etc.)
Moreover, the organisation will provide an opportunity for employees to engage in professional development by attending the course, which could enhance employee morale.
